Standard economic theory assumes that we behave rationally: make logical & consistent choices that maximise utility. In this song, there is conflict between an emotion system which is automatic but prone to error & a reason system that is slow but rational. Behavioural economists use the term “bounded rationality” to explain why people make apparently irrational decisions - in this case, to stay in a toxic relationship.
